Parent: Simon Rohlman Name: Rohlman Rohlman Location: Grant Parent: Anna Hunsworth Birth date: 23 Sep 1915 Sex: M Race: W Leroy went to the middle of the ninth grade in school, and then had to quit, and work on the farm, because his father was ill. 1934-36 Leroy worked on Grand Coulee Dam. He lived in a tent with several other young men. In Palisades, he worked for Bob Davis, ranching; he drove for Roy Gutchaw(Bessie Nielsen's brother-in-law), hauling wheat fruit, cattle and anything else Roy wanted him to. Certificate of Discharge from Civilian Conservation Corps To all whom it may concern: This is to certify that Leroy Rohlman cc9-136389, a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps, who was enrolled April 10, 1934 at Wenatchee, Wa., is hereby discharged therefrom, by reason of Urgent Call per par 24 (a) Section II, War Dept. Reg. CCC dated 3-6-34, said Leroy Rohlman was born in Ephrata in the state of Washington when he enrolled he was nineteen years of age and by occupation a commercial truck driver. He had gray eyes, dark hair, dark complexion, and was five feet nine and one fourth inches in heighth. His color was white. Given under my hand at Camp Icicle F-29, Leavenworth, Wa. this eleventh day of June, one thousand nine hundred and thirty four. S. D. Smith, 1st Lieut., 908 C. A., Commanding 931st Company, CCC. (Dad worked as an Air Drill Operator) One time while he was bailing hay for R. L. Davis, he came home for dinner and there was a terrible smell. Gertrude asked him what itwas. He had killed a rattlesnake and put it in his back pocket. He had sat on it all day and it was a very hot day! He played baseball on the Palisades team. They played other communities-Waterville, Stemelt, etc.; he played pitcher catcher, and short stop. He worked for Bonneville as foreman of a steel yard, then Ephrata Air base, then Larson. Leroy worked on Larson Air Force Base in Moses Lake, during WWII, pouring cement. He received a certificate from the President of the United States for pouring the most cement. Next he drove the school bus from Palisades to Wenatchee, for the students 7th grade and up. Then he worked at North Central Chevrolet as a mechanic until time each day to pick up the students and take them home. Leroy and Gertrude, Linda and Judi moved to East Wenatchee in 1949. Leroy and Gertrude retired in 1978. In the summers of 1978 and 1979, they spent time in Alaska; in the winters they went to Apache Junction, Arizona. Then they moved to Plain, Washington for twelve years. They rented their house out while living at Plain. They then moved back to their house in East Wenatchee. Wenatchee Dad's memorial service was May 30 at Telford's Chapel of the Valley Mortuary in the chapel. He was cremated and his ashes spread on the riverbank of the Wenatchee River at Judi and Don's cabin near Plain, Washington.[newinfo.FTW] In 1939, Leroy worked for Bob Davis, spraying apples. He and Gertrude got a seed loan for an apple orchard. They rented Nellie's place. They sprayed, but the neighbors didn't; the county pulled out all the trees. The next year the apple price went up, but they no longer had an orchard. They couldn't pay for the seed and buy Nellie's house ($10 a month). In 1940 they moved to Entiat and went to work for Mr. Gallagher in his orchard. They stayed there almost a year. They were in Nellie Kramer's house in Palisades, when Linda was born. In 1942, they moved to Soap Lake. They lived in Mrs. Smith's Motor Court. Grandma and Grandpa Nielsen lived there, too. The men worked building Larson Air Force Base. In 1944, they moved back to Palisades. They moved into Grandma and Grandpa Nielsen's house, as they had moved back to Seattle. Leroy worked for Bob Davis in the orchard, potatoes and in the alfalfa. He also drove the school bus into Wenatchee, working at the North Central Chevrolet as a mechanic until time to drive the students back to Palisades. In 1949, the family moved to East Wenatchee, and he worked full-time as a mechanic. In 1955, Leroy and Howard VanDyke leased a gas station, Midway Texaco. In 1972 they sold out and Leroy went to work for Far West Services (son-in-law, Don Telford's company). He and Gertrude retired in 1978- he in April, she in November. In 1978 and 1979 they spent winters in Arizona and summers in Alaska. In 1980, they moved to Plain, Wa. staying there until 1992 when they moved back to their home in East Wenatchee. His father had sisters who were nuns. Leroy didn't like nuns; said they were mean. A priest came to Mae Hiawatha at either Christmastime or Easter and baptized all the kids Catholic Dad was 84 years, 8 months, and 3 days old when he died. Article in newspaper- Wenatchee World- May 27 and 29, 2000 In Memoriam Leroy Anthony Rohlman, East Wenatchee Leroy Anthony Rohlman, 84, of East Wenatchee, a longtime resident of North Central Washington, died Friday, May 26, 2000 at Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee. He was born September 23, 1915 to Samuel "Sime" and Anna Hauswirth Rohlman in Mae Hiawatha, near Wilson Creek. He was one of 11 children. Leroy was married to Gertrude Nielsen on April 23, 1939 in East Wenatchee, with the Reverend Jay Eller officiating. Last month, they celebrated their 61st anniversary. He is survived by his wife, Gertrude at home in East Wenatchee; three daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Arden Apted, Marysville, Judi and Don Telford, Plain, and Sue and Darrel Jeffries, East Wenatchee; three sisters, Helen Davis, East Wenatchee, Alice Bower, Richland, and Marie Stoner, Yakima; three sisters-in-law, Helen Rohlman and Bessie Nielsen, East Wenatchee, and Lucile Routh, Yakima; one granddaughter, Vicki Sherman, Big Fork, Montana; four grandsons, Christopher Apted, Liberty Lake, Randall Apted, Bellevue, Brett Telford, East Wenatchee, and Kevin Jeffries, Wenatchee; three great-granddaughters, Samantha Apted, Liberty Lake, Taylor and Shae Telford, East Wenatchee; and two great-grandsons, Mike Jeffries, East Wenatchee and Ian Apted, Liberty Lake; numerous nieces and nephews; and many wonderful friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, four brothers, and one grandson, Scott Jeffries. As a young man, Leroy loved to play baseball, playing on a Palisades team and traveling to other communities to play. He worked on Grand Coulee Dam, living in a tent with other young men; drove truck hauling fruit and wheat. He worked for Bonneville Power and worked on Ephrata and Larson Air Force Bases during World War II. While living in Palisades, he drove the school bus into Wenatchee and worked as a mechanic at North Central Chevrolet during the school day, transporting the students back home each afternoon. Moving to East Wenatchee in 1949, he continued working full time at North Central Chevrolet until 1957, when he became co-owner of Midway Texaco on Wenatchee Avenue. During these years, he enjoyed elk hunting and fishing and was a member of Good Sams and the East Wenatchee Gun Club. In 1972, he went to work for Far West Services, retiring in 1978. For two years he and Gertrude traveled to Alaska in the summer and Arizona in the winter. They then moved to Plain to live by the Wenatchee River. Poor health forced them to move back to their home in East Wenatchee in 1992. Services will be held on Tuesday, May 30, 2000 at 2 p.m. at Telford's Chapel of the Valley in East Wenatchee. The Reverend Doyle Goldy will be officiating. Visitation will be Sunday, May 28 from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. and Monday, May 29, from 5 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Wenatchee Hospice or "Our House" in Wenatchee, or a charity of your choice.
