Grandpa legally adopted Leonard when he joined the Air Force. He couldn't join the Air Force under the name Nielsen unless he was adopted.

Palisades Man Weds in South
Miss Norma Lucille Johnson of San Rafael, California, became the bride of Sergeant Leonard Nielsen of Palisades, January 3 at 8 p.m. at a ceremony in the First Presbyterian Church. Dr. John Jefferson Canoler married the couple in San Rafael.
A blackout Saturday night almost halted the ceremony, but the all-clear signal blew 20 minutes before the couple were scheduled to take their nuptial vows.
Attendants at the wedding were Staff Sergeant and Mrs. Walter H. Bauer of San Rafael, also newly married. Mrs. Bauer was the former Jewel Maehler.
The bride wore a rose dress, blue hat, matching veil and blue accessories. Her corsage was of gardenias. The bridegroom and best man who are both stationed at Hamilton Field were in uniform.
The couple are residing at the Wilkins Hotel. Mrs. Nielsen is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Alder Johnson of Unalaska. She has had a governmental position at the San Francisco Presidio and has made her home in San Rafael for one year. Sgt. Nielsen is the son of Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Nielsen of Palisades.

Obituary- Leonard Francis Nielsen- 82 years, 7 months, 8 days
Leonard Francis Pape Nielsen, Major, USAF Ret., 82, died peacefully on September 24, 2002 in Albuquerque, New Mexico after a lengthy illness. Mr. Nielsen conducted his life as a gentleman and a patriot. He began his military career by enlisting in 1939 and then attended Officer's Candidate School in 1941 where he was promoted to Second Lieutenant. He was a veteran of two wars, World War II, serving in Guam and again in Korea ("the forgotten war"). During the course of his service he received the Bronze Star, Korean War Victory Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. After his retirement from the military, he settled in Albuquerque, New Mexico to finish his college degree and raise his family. In 1966 he returned to government life to again serve his country, working with the Defense Intelligence Agency in Washington, D. C. His final retirement in 1982 returned him to Albuquerque to live out his life with his wife, Arlene.
Survivors include Arlene M. Nielsen, his wife of 59 years, daughters, Sandra A. Erickson of Albuquerque and Erle M. Nielsen and son-in-law, Joshua L. Menter of Fairfax, Virginia. Mr. Nielsen's youngest daughter, Shelley, predeceased him in 1991. He was also the very proud grandfather of Michelle A. Erickson, Jessica N. Menter, and Seth M. Menter along with the very new addition of his great-grandchild, Jaden Lawrence Sandoval. His sister, Gertrude M. Rohlman and her family along with many nieces and nephews of Wenatchee, Washington also survive him.
Private services have been held under the direction of Sandia Funeral Care, 7601 Wyoming Blvd. N.E., Albuquerque, New Mexico. (505-821-0010).

Internment of Cremains was done at the Ft. Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Colorado on August 8, 2003 at 11 a.m. Address is 4400 West Kenyon Ave., Denver, 80236
