Personal Notes: |
Entered into Rest Jan. 21, 1976, Wenatchee, Wa. Memorial services at Telford's Chapel of the Valley on Fri. Jan. 23, 1976 at 2 p.m. Officiated by Rev. Jay Eller. Cremation to follow.
Her nickname was Dot. She moved from Sibley, Iowa with her parents when she was eleven years old, to Reynolds, ND. When she was sixteen, she moved with her mother and sisters and one brother to Seattle, Wa. She had to quit school to help her mother support the family. Her mother never got a divorce from Rueben. Zella was just a baby when they moved. Ted stayed in Minot, where he was a pharmacist. Her first husband was Leonard Francis Pape. Her second husband was Carl Lawrence Nielsen. They married in 1921; in 1926 they moved to Palisades, Wa, where they owned and operated an apple orchard. While there, she was active in the Palisades Community Church and the Palisades Grange. In 1942 they moved to Seattle. Social security # 531-26-5555 Issued in Washington. Zip code of residence at death- 98115, Seattle, King, Wa. Died in Wenatchee, Chelan, Wa. Colonial Vista Nursing Home. [newinfo.FTW] Census of 1900 taken as of June 1 Sibley, Osceola, Iowa Dalrymple, Gertrude O,, daughter, age 2, month and date of birth- June, 1897, Iowa enumerated in the family of Ruben S. and Millie M. Dalrymple Gertrude Dalrymple Nielsen, June 28, 1975, Sat., 4107 NE 77th, Seattle, Wa, 98115 June 28- Seventy eight years old today! How far back can one go- in recalling their childhood- when second childhood overtakes us? Heaven forbid! I was born in Sibley, Iowa, but recall nothing of my childhood there. Our father had gone on ahead and Mom followed later to a small town in No. Dakota- Reynolds- I know now it was a mean ( in the truest sense of the word) town. It had nothing to offer either adult or child- except the annual Sunday School picnic and drunken brawls on July 4th. When our Dad was building our home we stayed at the only hotel in town, a modest wooden building facing Main Street. The lobby (?) boasted the usual potted palm and a lovely oleander tree, which gave Mr. Mealy- a prominent place in"society"- for no one else owned either one. The oleander was beautiful! I think I was about nine years old when we came to Reynolds. Our home was comparable to most of the other middle class homes. Of course the banker Mr. Murphy had a larger one as did Mr. Lebacken ( who Dad worked for). NO ONE had bathrooms- but the out houses were something else. Next door to us was a German family- the Baumanns. Everyone raised a big garden- but theirs always attracted us- and we'd sneak in and pull up the carrots- wipe the rich manured dirt off on our coarse, ribbed black stockings( the dirt didn't show). Or we'd pull up the huge stalks of rhubarb and use the leaves for hats. The stalks were so sour we could hardly eat them- but we salted them and they tasted better and I might add- sweeter. To get back to our home- it was beautifully built- altho we moved into it before the big upstairs was finished. It all had to be lathed and plastered- and I recall at one time I resolved I wouldn't go to school, so I dropped my shoes down behind the lathes- you can be sure my Mother found a way to retrieve them- and I went to school with a very sore behind! There was a wide porch across the front of the house. Two front doors, I don't know why- one opened into the parlor- the other into the dining room. Two big windows- with fine colored top panels were Dad's pride. Wonder if they are still there? I don't think our Mother had much to say about the furnishings. Dad went to Grand Forks for red velvet portiers and bright Brussels carpets(Must have copied the rooms from the brothels he frequented occassionally). Strange how you can interpret things when you're older. Summers in No. Dakota were extremely hot- Sometimes we were allowed to go barefooted, but Mom thot it very unlady-like. It proved to be more than that as we trudged over a "stubble field" to buy a quart of milk. Our container must have held much more than a quart for it was an empty 3 pound lard bucket. Do you know what a "stubble field" is? After a field of corn has been cut there is a few inches of stalk left- and once that is dry it is like so many huge doggus (?) We must have looked like a couple of dancers dodging around them. No. Dakota raises lots of wheat- and a beautiful sight it is to see the fields all golden and waveing in the sun waiting for the threshing crew to come and harvest it. One summer I was permitted to spend a week or so with a school-girl on a farm. The harvest hands were up at dawn- and at 10:00 a.m. we two girls were given lunches to carry across the fields to the men. This must have been an early form of our coffee break. How they did eat! The farm had a milk house- built over a spring- and each day great flat pans filled with milk were carried out to cool and let the cream rise. The mother would skim off the thick yellow cream and churn it for butter. Each week she would brot us 4 pounds packed in crocks and each crock had a design pressed on top like a cameo. The 4 pounds cost us $1.00 and how Mom would hate the high price! None of the ladies seemed to go to town to buy groceries. Actually there wasn't a great deal to buy. Most ate vegetables were home grown- and in the fall potatoes were dug, put in bins, carrots too found their way into cellars and great heads of cabbage hung from the ceilings. On one side of our cellar there were bins for coal- two kinds- hard coal and soft. Hard coal for the enormous black and nickle heater in the front room and soft coal for the kitchen stove. That heater was like a chicken feeder with a big built in cone shaped affair to let the coal come down as needed. The thing held about seven scuttles of coal. Ted or Mom brot up from the cellar, though Aunt Ruth claims she had to do it. It conjures up quite a picture- a 7 or 8 year old child struggling up stairs with that heavy scuttles (then it had to be lifted high above her head and poured into the stove) Ah, Well! In the winter the fire was started and never allowed to go out. One good shake and the fire box was filled with a fresh supply of coal. There was "isin glass" windows on three side and the blue and green and yellow flames danced, rose and fell, and licked the glass as if they wanted to escape. Fascinating! It didn't take much to amuse us in those long ago days. You know there really were fire-fairies, and if you looked closely, long enough, you could see their lovely, colorful dresses- and sparkly crowns of rainbow colors and golden wands with emerald tips. When it came to play-time- "paper dolls" were our passion! No paper or magazine was safe from our scissors if we found a picture of a child with just the right posture for "dressing", We had very little candy when we were kids- but what a marvelous assortment there was to choose from. Great black jaw breakers- they would last for almost a day. Hard candy with designs through each piece. Real little tin skillets with a fried egg and a tin spoon to eat it with. Candy sticks came wrapped in waxed paper and each one was included with a gold ring. Candy kisses were large and gooey- 5 for a penny. Penny candy was an institution. If you ever had a nickel, you could get a whole bag full of different candies. We always brot it home and divided in piles- one for you, one for you, one for you, etc. Gum was really some thing else. We bot long sticks of white gum.(I really think it was refined parafin). To begin with it was quite sweet, but if it held on til the following day- most of the sugar was gone. Each stick was wrapped in pretty flowered paper, which was carefully saved and put in our paper-doll box and was saved to form part of a wardrobe. Days were long when I was a child. Lots of time to play. I can't remember ever leaving the neighborhood, except in winter when we'd take our sleds down to the railroad hill and slide for blocks, being very careful not to do a belly flop. We played "hide and seek", "Run, sheep, run", Drop the handkerchief and "gossip". That was the most fun, but you needed quite a few kids to play that. We'd sit in a circle and one would be selected to start off with a sentence, which was whispered to the one next to you and on around. Suffice it to say, the sentence really never came out the same. Sometimes it was pretty crazy. Burial at Evergreen-Washelli Cemeteries, 11111 Aurora Ave. North, Seattle, King, Washington 206-362-5200 or 1-800-755-1350 Her grave is in Evergreen Cemetery- Section 18, lot 0904, grave 8 (West side between 23rd Psalm tablet and Lord's Prayer statue). She is buried next to second husband, Carl Nielsen. Grandma told Mom and Uncle Len that if they didn't behave she would give them to the gypsies. They always waited for the Watkins, McNess and Raleigh salesman to come. They sold medicine; there were no doctors around. Their banker was Mr. Murphy; Dad's employer, LeBacken We moved to Reynolds, ND from Sibley, Ia when I was about 9.
