Personal Notes: |
Roy is a carrier of Gauche's disease.
Reminiscing with Roy and Hattie when they visited us at Port Susan in August, 1997. Roy moved to Seattle when he was about a year old. His dad, and brothers, Wes and Vic built the house at 3120 E. 115th in Lake City (a district in Seattle). Harold may have helped, also. Roy's earliest memory was when he was sitting on the back porch, and his Dad backed the car over sister, Vivian, killing her. Roy and Arnold went to Lake City Elementary- grades 1-8, then to Lincoln High School- grades 9-12. Harold went to the old Lake City Elementary and then to Roosevelt High School. John, their father, worked for Columbia Lumber as a truck driver. After the depression, Roy remembers going to Columbia Lumber after school at Lincoln to ride home with his Dad. During the depression, John and sons used the old Buick with back cut out. They cut and carried 6-8 foot lengths of trees and hauled them to the pulp mill in Everett. They lived in the woods in tents. John stayed with Columbia Lumber until his heart trouble forced early retirement. Lorinda worked as a seamstress for a dress shop until it closed; then worked for a mattress company, working on the side at home making dresses. She started her own shop early in the 1940's. John had a heart attack in 1938. Arnold and Roy enlisted in the Navy in 1942. Roy was sent to school in South Dakota at a US sub base for welding. He didn't have duty on a sub, just worked on them. He was on an APD #8, the USS Waters, expeditionary forces. Only 3 of the 9 ships made it through the war. They were converted troop carriers. They transported 1st and 4th Marines. The APD SVCS- troop carrier was a shallow draft 1918 torpedo boat. They landed troops at night. Roy saw action from Guadal Canal to Louganville, then transferred back to the States, after passing the test to qualify for two years of college and then officer's school. His choice was engineering for four years. The war ended before he finished. He went to school one year in Louisville, Ky., and one year at Rice in Houston, Tx. He married Hattie before he finished thes second year. He was sent back to the fleet in California and then to Florida. Hattie went back to Louisville, then joined him in Florida, where he mustered out. They arrived in Seattle on Thanksgiving Day and stayed until the following July, when they moved back to Louisville, Ky. In Seattle, Roy worked two months for Todd Shipyards, then 3-4 months driving for Seattle Transit. He worked for National Steel Construction making hot water tanks. In Kentucky, he bounced around until he went to work at a sheet metal shop making furnaces. Then he went to watchmaking school. After that, he had the opportunity to go to work for Kentucky Synthetic Rubber Co. because of things he learned at watchmaking school. The company was later acquired by Michelin Rubber Co. Roy met Hattie in May of 1944 at the Dugout Room in Louisville. He had a date that evening with a redhead, but by the time she got there, Roy ignored her all evening. In Feb. of 1945, Hattie took a train to Houston, because Roy couldn't get enough leave time to go to Louisville. He had proposed at Christmastime, but that was the first leave he had. Hattie went to beauty school and became a beautician. After their children were born, she stayed home until the youngest was in junior high. Then she went to Drahn's Business College. She started in the card department of Sears; then as a teller in the cashier's cage there. After that she worked in the office at Western Auto. Hattie's parents were John Robert Collins and Mary Louise Stone. They lived in Mount Eden, Ky.; he was a truck driver and a farmer; she was a housewife. John had a still and sold moonshine during the depression to feed the family. Hattie was born in Corydon, In. There were five girls and two boys, Hattie being the fifth child. One died at birth. Hattie went to school, grades 1-8 at School #8. There were 8 kids in school and three were Collins siblings. She went to school in Lanesville, In., then moved to New Albany, In. for high school. Hattie was born at home and the birth was not registered until 16 years later. Roy's brother, Wesley and his wife, Lillian lived in the Northgate area of Seattle for a while. Wes disappeared for seven years about 1935-41. No one knows where he was, but rumors are that he was in prison in Montana. Wes and his brother, Vic both worked on the Boulder Dam project. Wes was a concrete man. Vic met his wife, Catherine through his boss and best friend, Al Paine, Catherine's brother. Arnold joined the Navy in 1942, a couple months before Roy. He was assigned to dry dock movement on the Ohio and Mississippi rivers. Harold went to work at the Sears catalog store while in high school. He worked on roller skates. The first couple days almost killed him. Roy used to pester Harold at home when he was asking his mom for help. Harold joined the Marine Reserves at Sand Point Naval Station in Seattle. Later he went to Wenatchee and met and married Ruth. When he arrived at his mother's house with a new wife, everyone was surprised. Roy died in a Hospice in Louisville, Ky. of cancer of the esophagus or larynx. Roy was 76.
