The morning started out rainy and windy as we headed off towards Emstrure. Today would also see us through two fo our three river crossings. The rivers of course being glacier fed were cold to say the least. The first was easy enough, the second a little wider. Good new is everyone stayed dry, with the exception of feet and calves. Halfway through the 10 mike hike, we entered the black deserts of Mælifellssandur. The terrain became much flatter and rockier, with lava rock everywhere. Before arriving at the Botnar hut we took a side trip to the magnificent Markarfljót canyon. The canyon was cut by a river, and reaches an amazing 670 feet deep.
