According to information given by Betty Cowan, you could get a marriage license through the mail in those days, but not a divorce. James left Susan when the twins were about six months old. The twins were living with Susan's father, William Bryant. When he died, James Williams' brother, Dock came and took the girls to James in Oregon.

On this day this cause came on to be heard on plaintiffs complaints and depositions taken in the said cause and it appearing to the court that the defendant has been duly served with process and it further appears to the court that the plaintiff has been duly served with process and it further appears to the court that the plaintiff is a resident of the state and has been for more than 12 months before the commencement of this suit. That plaintiff and defendant were married on about the 4th day of September 1881 in Madison County, Ar. and that they lived together as man and wife until about 23rd day of June 1885. That at that time defendant abandoned plaintiff without any just and reasonable cause and has remained absent up to the present time and during which period the said defendant has wholly failed and neglected to provide any support to said plaintiff and their three children to wit- Sarah Melvina, age 5 years, Rosette, aged three years and Hetta E. Williams, aged 3 yrs- the issue of said marriage and the court further finds that the cause of this suit occured within five years before the commencement of this suit. It is therefore ordered, adjudged and decreed that the bonds of matrimony heretofore existing between the plaintiff and defendant be dissolved, set aside and held for naught and that the plaintiff be restored all the rights and priveleges of a single and unmarried woman the same as if she had never been married and it is further decreed that the plaintiff have and retain the custody of their three children aforesaid to wit: Sarah Melvina, Rosette and Hetty E. Williams and that said plaintiff have and recover all of her costs in this suit laid out and expended.
